Hip pain can show up on a trail, climbing stairs, getting out of a chair, or lying on your side. The location matters: pain on the outside of the hip, deep in the groin, and near the buttock can come from different problems and require different care.
At Sierra Spine & Fitness, Dr. Craig Roberts, DC evaluates what is contributing to your symptoms and builds a personalized, non-surgical plan. Care may combine diagnostic ultrasound when appropriate, chiropractic and hands-on treatment, progressive rehabilitation, and selected therapies such as shockwave, laser, or EMTT.
Common hip problems we evaluate
- Outer-hip pain and gluteal tendinopathy
- Greater trochanteric pain syndrome, often called hip bursitis
- Hip osteoarthritis
- Proximal hamstring tendon pain near the sitting bone
- Adductor-related groin pain
- Movement-related stiffness
- Pain referred from the low back or sacroiliac region
Pain lying on your side or standing on one leg may involve the outer-hip tendons. Groin pain and reduced motion can suggest a joint-related problem. Buttock pain may involve a tendon, the spine, or another structure. These patterns guide assessment but do not replace an examination.
A clearer picture of what is involved
Your evaluation considers hip motion, strength, walking, balance, and the activities that reproduce pain. We also assess relevant low-back and nerve findings because pain felt in the hip does not always originate there.
Ultrasound may help assess accessible gluteal tendons, bursae, and other soft tissues. It does not answer every question about deep joint structures or the labrum. X-rays, MRI, or specialist referral may be appropriate depending on the findings.
Match treatment to the source of hip pain
Outer hip tendon pain
For gluteal tendinopathy and greater trochanteric pain syndrome, the plan often emphasizes managing irritating compression and progressively strengthening the hip. Focused or radial shockwave may be considered for selected persistent tendon presentations; results vary, and we assess whether it adds value to your recovery.
Hip arthritis and joint stiffness
Care may emphasize strength, comfortable mobility, walking tolerance, and practical changes to daily activity. Hands-on treatment and selected adjunctive therapies may help manage symptoms. We do not promise that these therapies reverse arthritis or restore lost cartilage.
Hamstring and groin tendon pain
Treatment depends on the involved tissue and the demands placed on it. Rehabilitation progresses from tolerable early loading toward strength, endurance, and activity-specific demands. Further evaluation may be needed when findings suggest a tear or another condition.
Contributing spine and movement problems
Chiropractic care, joint mobilization, and soft-tissue techniques may be used for relevant restrictions in the hip, pelvis, or spine. Exercises help reinforce improved movement and restore confidence with everyday tasks.
Non-surgical technologies, selected for your diagnosis
Laser and EMTT may be considered as adjuncts for selected musculoskeletal presentations. Evidence differs across diagnoses, and research using one device or protocol does not establish identical results with every system. We explain the rationale and use your response to guide care.
Acoustic or mechanical energy delivered to selected treatment areas. It may be considered for selected persistent tendon presentations; we assess whether it adds value to your recovery.
Extracorporeal Magnetotransduction Therapy uses rapidly changing electromagnetic fields to interact with tissue at the cellular level. Non-invasive and useful when direct pressure over the hip is uncomfortable.
Therapeutic red and infrared light energy may support cellular activity, circulation, and modulation of pain and inflammation in appropriate cases.
In-office ultrasound helps assess accessible gluteal tendons, bursae, and other soft tissues so care is guided by what is actually involved.
Experience that informs your care
Dr. Roberts graduated summa cum laude and as valedictorian from Western States Chiropractic College. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Human Biology and a Diplomate in Chiropractic Neurology, with a background in strength and conditioning. Progress may mean sleeping on your side, managing stairs, getting up comfortably, or returning to hiking. We reassess motion, strength, and activity tolerance as your plan progresses.

Hip pain — frequently asked questions
No. Outer-hip pain is often described as bursitis, but the gluteal tendons and other structures may contribute. Examination and appropriate imaging help clarify what needs attention.
