WalkingA non-surgical, injection-free approach to heel pain
That sharp heel pain when you get out of bed can follow you into work, walks, and the activities you enjoy. If stretching, shoe changes, or rest have not resolved it, you may need a clearer diagnosis and a more complete recovery plan.
At Sierra Spine & Fitness, Dr. Craig Roberts, DC combines a careful examination, diagnostic ultrasound when appropriate, focused and radial shockwave, and progressive rehabilitation for selected plantar fasciitis presentations. Our approach is non-surgical and does not rely on injections.
Recognize the symptoms
- Pain beneath the heel or along the inner arch
- Painful first steps in the morning
- Pain after sitting
- Discomfort with prolonged standing
- Symptoms during or after running
- Tenderness near the plantar fascia attachment
Plantar fasciitis is a common name for pain associated with the plantar fascia, the strong band of tissue along the sole of the foot. Persistent cases are sometimes called plantar fasciopathy because the problem can involve changes in tissue structure and load tolerance, not just inflammation.
A clearer picture of what is involved
Heel pain can also come from the heel fat pad, nerve irritation, a stress injury, the Achilles tendon, or another condition. Your evaluation considers symptom location, foot and ankle motion, calf strength, walking mechanics, and recent changes in activity.
Ultrasound may help assess plantar fascia thickness, appearance, and other accessible soft tissues when indicated. X-rays may be useful for selected bone-related questions. Imaging is interpreted with your examination rather than treated as the whole diagnosis.
A plan built around your foot and your goals
Consider focused and radial shockwave
Shockwave delivers acoustic or mechanical energy to selected treatment areas. It has been studied in chronic plantar fasciitis, with some trials reporting improved pain and function. Outcomes vary by patient and protocol. Focused treatment may target a localized area at a selected depth, while radial treatment can address a broader superficial region.
Address contributing movement limitations
Hands-on care, soft-tissue techniques, and foot or ankle joint mobilization may help improve relevant movement restrictions. Chiropractic care can be incorporated when the examination identifies contributing joint problems.
Build foot and calf strength
Your plan may include calf strengthening, plantar fascia loading, foot-muscle exercises, balance work, and a gradual return to longer walks or running. We help adjust footwear and activity demands while building your ability to tolerate them.
Select additional therapies thoughtfully
Laser or EMTT may be considered in appropriate cases as adjuncts to the broader plan. We explain the purpose, cost, and available evidence. These tools complement rehabilitation rather than replacing the work needed to restore strength and activity tolerance.
